A linen factory who rose on the area of today's Żyrardów in 1829 originated the city. She was it is one of biggest and most modern linen factories in contemporary Europe. Żyrardów owes its name to the first technical director of the factory, Philip de Girard. He was a m. in. with inventor of the machine for mechanical spinning flax. In 1916 Żyrardów received a town charter. After seizing the factory in the XIX second-half in. by two German industrialists: of Karol Agusta Dittricha and Karol Hielle she stayed extended, and together with her factory settlement.
